I had a great time talking politics on the "Buddy Cianci Show" on WPRO-AM/FM today. Cianci was the longest serving Mayor in the history of Providence and is a mutual colleague with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. It's a small world!
Anyway we had fun dissecting last night's election of Republican Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.
(Editor's note: Just a few hours ago, I received this statement from "Organizing for America," the political arm of the Obama White House. I am still on their email address list from my days covering the campaign as a freelance reporter.
When they add lines such as "I am grateful you're part of this fight with us," please realize it is a generic email, not a sign I am "with" them. Every now and then I like to share campaign emails with my viewers, because I think they may give you some interesting insights. I think it's important to share them "as is." I have been doing the same with Republican candidates, such as Meg Whitman, whenever I think you might be interested).
In any event, here is the Obama political take and reaction to the Senate election, unedited:
"Mark:
"Yesterday's disappointing election results show deep discontent with the pace of change. I know the OFA community and the President share that frustration.
"We also saw what we knew to be true all along: Any change worth making is hard and will be fought at every turn. While it doesn't take away the sting of this loss, there is no road to real change without setbacks along the way.
"We could have simply sought to do things that were easy, that wouldn't stir up controversy. But changes that aren't controversial rarely solve the problem.
"Our country continues to face the same fundamental challenges it faced yesterday. Our health care system still needs reform. Wall Street still needs to be held accountable. We still need to create good jobs. And we still need to continue building a clean energy economy.
"The President isn't walking away from these challenges. In fact, his determination and resolve are only stronger. We must match that commitment with our own.
"But it won't be easy. Real change never is. For that reason, I am grateful you're part of this fight with us.
"Thank you,
Mitch

Thanks, Mark, for sharing the communications from the White House and other sources. I recognize that you're one of those "old fashioned" journalists (Thank Heaven, there are still some of you), who keeps his own political preferences out of his reporting.
In particular, it's interesting to see what the pols say when they are addressing primarily their own supporters, rather than the general public. To say that "changes that aren't controversial rarely solve the problem," is simply wrong. Building a concensus is the best way to solve problems without creating more problems! It has been way too much "My way, or the highway" in this administration. Let's hope they will now pay more attention to the will of the people and abandon that approach.
